In the ballroom scene, is Sarah still in the labyrinth?

Sarah in bubble

Persephone hesitantly asked:
In the ballroom scene, is Sarah still in the labyrinth?

Hmm. I guess it depends on your perspective. At first I would say yes, but, as Bug pointed out, really she is over the Labyrinth when you think about it. She's not physically inside the walls of the Labyrinth, but I believe she is still inside the realm of the Labyrinth. I suppose technically she was not inside the Labyrinth but was inside that bubble instead. This question really has me thinking, now!

at this point, one must really stop, pop over to Critical Analysis, and read:

ANOTHER LONG-WINDED THEORY FROM DOPPELGANGER

which is so excellent, it deserved its own page in that section.
(Don't forget to rush right back here and read the follow-ups to his analysis below!)

(snip! all of doppleganger's wonderful explanation)

Wow! Yeesh, I think I understood all of that as I read it, but now it's lost. I agree anyway. Jareth's main theme was forgetfulness, and he used it thusly in the dream. I mean the ball room scene. However, the people there were just as real as he and Sarah, so how did they get there? A big facade as well? They all ate the peach too? He invited them?

Wrecked Ball That's my guess, that the other guests were invited. He did send out several crystals, in addition to the one Sarah was in. In the book, didn't all the little crystals combine into a gigantic crystal hovering over the labyrinth? Now whether or not the other guests would remember the bash, that I can't guess! (Maybe for Jareth's sake, it would be better if they forgot too, since Sarah did kind of wreck the party...)

Adding the updates to my page, I re-read doppleganger's wonderful theory and began to consider:

lastly, in the final confrontation jareth made one last attempt to seduce her, knowing of her tendency to forget "the words." he was there, remember, when sarah said, "damn. i can never remember that line."

Yes, Jareth was there both as the owl in the park at the beginning of the movie and as Jareth at the end.

I also wonder if Jareth was Agnes, the junklady, in disguise. It was never made clear in the final script of the movie, but I think there is enough evidence to suggest it: Jareth disguises himself as the blind beggar and transforms himself into the owl. How hard would it be for him to transform into one of the junk people? Another possible piece of evidence is how angry Agnes becomes when Sarah reads "that line" from the book in her junkyard bedroom. It may be that Agnes is angry at failing to perform the task that Jareth must have assigned her. However, suppose Jareth would come to dread "that line" very early on, indeed. This reinforces his disappointment at the end of the final confrontation when Sarah remembers "that line" without referring to the book. Out of necessity, Jareth's most powerful weapon would be forgetfulness resulting in a number of attempts to make her forget.
